Thanks Bill. Note that I've given up on trying to file a bug report (difficult to figure out the right issue tracker URL and too difficult the right component to attribute it to, for a non-fedora programmer at least).

2016-04-28 05:10:29 -0500 Perguntou Fedora 23 away screen hangs because Java Swing app crashes

This is a regression from Fedora 22.

How to reproduce:

  • Open a Java swing app that has an uncaught exception handler and shows a dialog when that happens.
  • Wait until the away screen (or screen saver) shows up and then wait another hour. Then push space to get rid the away screen. It hangs.

What happens:

  • Once the away screen shows up, the Java Swing app starts crashing with this exception (OpenJDK 8).

    Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.ClassCastException: sun.awt.image.BufImgSurfaceData cannot be cast to sun.java2d.xr.XRSurfaceData at sun.java2d.xr.XRPMBlitLoops.cacheToTmpSurface(XRPMBlitLoops.java:145) at sun.java2d.xr.XrSwToPMTransformedBlit.Transform(XRPMBlitLoops.java:400) at sun.java2d.xr.XRDrawImage.renderImageXform(XRDrawImage.java:63) at sun.java2d.pipe.DrawImage.transformImage(DrawImage.java:264) at sun.java2d.pipe.DrawImage.copyImage(DrawImage.java:76) at sun.java2d.pipe.DrawImage.copyImage(DrawImage.java:1014) at sun.java2d.pipe.ValidatePipe.copyImage(ValidatePipe.java:186) at sun.java2d.SunGraphics2D.drawImage(SunGraphics2D.java:3318) at sun.java2d.SunGraphics2D.drawImage(SunGraphics2D.java:3296) at javax.swing.plaf.nimbus.AbstractRegionPainter.paintWithFixedSizeCaching(AbstractRegionPainter.java:664) at javax.swing.plaf.nimbus.AbstractRegionPainter.paint(AbstractRegionPainter.java:157) at javax.swing.plaf.nimbus.AbstractRegionPainter.paint(AbstractRegionPainter.java:43) at javax.swing.plaf.nimbus.SynthPainterImpl.paint(SynthPainterImpl.java:61) at javax.swing.plaf.nimbus.SynthPainterImpl.paintForeground(SynthPainterImpl.java:110) at javax.swing.plaf.nimbus.SynthPainterImpl.paintArrowButtonForeground(SynthPainterImpl.java:290) at javax.swing.plaf.synth.SynthArrowButton$SynthArrowButtonUI.paint(SynthArrowButton.java:75) at javax.swing.plaf.synth.SynthButtonUI.update(SynthButtonUI.java:255) at javax.swing.JComponent.paintComponent(JComponent.java:780) at javax.swing.JComponent.paint(JComponent.java:1056) at javax.swing.plaf.synth.SynthSplitPaneDivider.paint(SynthSplitPaneDivider.java:91) at javax.swing.JComponent.paintChildren(JComponent.java:903) at javax.swing.JSplitPane.paintChildren(JSplitPane.java:1047) at javax.swing.JComponent.paint(JComponent.java:1065) at javax.swing.JComponent.paintChildren(JComponent.java:889) at javax.swing.JComponent.paint(JComponent.java:1065) at javax.swing.JLayeredPane.paint(JLayeredPane.java:586) at javax.swing.JComponent.paintChildren(JComponent.java:889) at javax.swing.JComponent.paintToOffscreen(JComponent.java:5217) at javax.swing.RepaintManager$PaintManager.paintDoubleBuffered(RepaintManager.java:1579) at javax.swing.RepaintManager$PaintManager.paint(RepaintManager.java:1502) at javax.swing.RepaintManager.paint(RepaintManager.java:1272) at javax.swing.JComponent.paint(JComponent.java:1042) at java.awt.GraphicsCallback$PaintCallback.run(GraphicsCallback.java:39) at sun.awt.SunGraphicsCallback.runOneComponent(SunGraphicsCallback.java:79) at sun.awt.SunGraphicsCallback.runComponents(SunGraphicsCallback.java:116) at java.awt.Container.paint(Container.java:1975) at java.awt.Window.paint(Window.java:3912) at javax.swing.RepaintManager$4.run(RepaintManager.java:842) at javax.swing.RepaintManager$4.run(RepaintManager.java:814) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at java.security.ProtectionDomain$JavaSecurityAccessImpl.doIntersectionPrivilege(ProtectionDomain.java:76) at javax.swing.RepaintManager.paintDirtyRegions(RepaintManager.java:814) at javax.swing.RepaintManager.paintDirtyRegions(RepaintManager.java:789) at javax.swing.RepaintManager.prePaintDirtyRegions(RepaintManager.java:738) at javax.swing.RepaintManager.access$1200(RepaintManager.java:64) at javax.swing.RepaintManager$ProcessingRunnable.run(RepaintManager.java:1732) at java.awt.event.InvocationEvent.dispatch(InvocationEvent ...

2016-03-18 07:38:52 -0500 Perguntou How do I get XChat (IRC app) notifications in Fedora 23, just like I had in Fedora 22?

When someone pings me on XChat, that tab in XChat turns blue. If I am in another window, I don't see that, so I want a notification blinking.

This worked on Fedora 22, but not on Fedora 23. If I go to Fedora -> settings -> notification, I can see that XChat notifications is "on", yet they don't show up.

I have a piece of Java code that worked fine on Ubuntu Linux 12.04, but crashes gnome 3 on a vanilla Fedora 22 installation on a brand new computer.

When I press a specific button in the Java app, my screen goes black and I see the login screen. All my windows are gone. The sudo journalctl -n2000 shows this a few hundred times:

2015-09-30 02:09:46 -0500 Resposta comentada Fedora 22 UI is unresponsive for 2 seconds for every new dialog

I have only installed the Gnome 3 toolbar from the gnome 3 website. Everything else is very vanilla. I do got 2 monitors: one connected with HDMI and one connected with DVI-D, both on an Intel graphics card. We're clearly dealing with a resource leak of some sort.

2015-09-29 10:10:37 -0500 Pergunta editada Fedora 22 UI is unresponsive for 2 seconds for every new dialog

Also reproduced on Fedora 23.

On a brand new computer, I 've installed Fedora 22 (gnome 3 default, 2 monitors, nothing special), but if I leave it on for more than few hours, every UI (Firefox, IntelliJ, ...) that opens a pop-up menu or a dialog freezes the screen for 1 to 3 seconds before appearing/disappearing.

This is very disruptive - how do I fix it or analyse the problem?

Diagnose info based on comment questions:

  • According to lspcimy graphics card is VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)
  • When it happens, memory is at 5.9GB (18.7%) of 31.3GB. Swap is 0. So it's not caused by swapping
  • When it happens, CPU is not higher than 4% on any of my 8 cores. The process monitor doesn't refresh on the screen during the dialog freeze, but afterwards it does show the same very low CPU for that time. Network history doesn't spike either. Memory neither. None of these 3 resources (cpu, memory, network) show any change during the dialog 2 second freeze.
  • When it happens, sudo journalctl -fshowed gnome-session[1786]: (gnome-shell:2073): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: gsignal.c:2569: instance '0x376ee90' has no handler with id '8758343' 6 times when I opened 1 dialog for IntelliJ. But it showed nothing when I opened the Firefox About dialog or Thunderbird new mail dialog. But ALL those dialogs hung for at least 2 seconds.
  • When it happens, software center does say "Software up to date" and "last checked 06:50" this time. So maybe software updates is innocent. OTH It only happens after the computer is active for several hours. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised it's only in the mornings, after the daily update at 06:50 (and then it bugs me so much that I reboot).

It's gotten so bad that even gnome crashed on me. Here's the journaltlc -r of when that happened.

Here's my fpaste --sysinfo

abrt-cli ls leads to this bug report

2015-09-29 10:07:09 -0500 Respondeu uma pergunta Fedora 22 UI is unresponsive for 2 seconds for every new dialog

Workaround to temporary fix the problem without rebooting the computer: Press ALT-F2 to bring up a prompt and type "r". It will reboot the Gnome Shell and all your open windows will return. The annoying 2 second freezes will go a away for a few hours.

This workaround can permanently freeze some of the open nautilus windows.

Manually copy the file Artec48.usbfile (for example from the Windows driver or from an old machine on which the scanner works) to /usr/share/sane/artec_eplus48u/Artec48.usb.

The /etc/sane.d/artec_eplus48u.conf file references that file, but it doesn't exist by default. The exact path of the usb file might be slightly different.

If I change that conf file accordingly (removing the "device ... 001 ..." line that I added), then Simple Scan immediately states during startup "No scanners detected". This seems worse than the original line. What's the motivation to use that magic number 5d8 in your answer?

2015-09-07 08:36:09 -0500 Perguntou Scanner doesn't work on Fedora (but did work on Ubuntu): Ultima Electronics Corp. Artec E+ 48U

I am using Fedora 22. I've got an old scanner Ultima Electronics Corp. Artec E+ 48U.

When I try to scan with Simple Scan , I get "Unable to connect to scanner". When I try to scan from the command line I get:

$ scanimage -L
No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

On Ubuntu linux it did work, but I had to do this:

$ lsusb
  Bus 001 Device 003: ID 05d8:4003 Ultima Electronics Corp. Artec E+ 48U
$ sudo gedit /etc/sane.d/artec_eplus48u.conf
  // Uncomment this line in that file:
  device libusb:001:003

Doing that, does't fix it on Fedora. The error messages are above stay the same.

In Simple Scan, when I try to Change Scanner, I do see Scan Source "Artec E+ 48U". The scanner itself doesn't show any scan of life when I try to scan something and it fails with "unable to connect to scanner". It is connected of course, otherwise it wouldn't show up in lsusb.

2015-08-27 09:13:26 -0500 Pergunta comentada Fedora 22 UI is unresponsive for 2 seconds for every new dialog

Added abrt-cli and fpaste information. It seems to blame konsole (I have a fedora 22 vanilla - so gnome 3 - with konsole installed). But I can consistently crash the gnome 3 desktop by opening a specific dialog in my Java app (and I wrote that myself and it does nothing special - and Java Swing should never be able to crash gnome 3 of course).
