2015-04-05 07:12:36 -0500 answered a question Create an icon in activities tab.

It sounds to me as though you're wanting to create .desktop file. I'm not sure what you mean saying it will set up cron jobs because I would think once you've set them up you're done and maybe you make a script to do it but you don't need a shortcut to it. However, to get a shortcut in the activities tab:

Gnome will create shortcuts for programs/scripts or whatever that have .desktop files. Gnome will look in a few different places but you should probably put your own into

/home/your-username/.local/share/applications

This is my .desktop file for Skype, you will just need to change the variables appropriately:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Skype
Comment=Skype Internet Telephony
Exec=/opt/skype/skype %U
Icon=/opt/skype/avatars/skype.png
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Encoding=UTF-8
Categories=Network;Application;
MimeType=x-scheme-handler/skype;
X-KDE-Protocols=skype

Also, happy Easter, He is risen!

2015-04-03 12:02:26 -0500 commented answer [meta] Questions that Deserve a LMGTFY Answer

Fair enough: Mark as Duplicate (if applicable). But is it useful to add an answer specifically in the case that there are other answers already there? And should the question be closed or downvoted?

2015-04-03 10:03:03 -0500 asked a question [meta] Questions that Deserve a LMGTFY Answer

I recently came across a question that was really simple to answer *. I haven't checked but it may well also be a duplicate on Ask Fedora. I answered the question because there were two answers that didn't say the thing I thought was most appropriate. Maybe that was the wrong thing to do though.

What should we be encouraging in the Ask Fedora community and how should we do so?

It seems to me that we obviously want people to use Google first but there are at least two issues with that:

  1. Ask Fedora becomes a resource on Google by people asking precisely those questions.
  2. Once the question has been asked, the question of how to encourage the community to do specific stuff is moot and the question needs to be responded to:
    1. Downvoting? Seems silly considering the user doesn't use Google and will likely be discouraged by this behaviour.
    2. Vote to close? Similar problem to (1)
    3. Answer the question? The problem then becomes how to teach the community when our behaviour reinforces the behaviour we are trying to discourage.

* I don't think that providing a link is going to be productive.

Hope that @cgnoz31's answer helps you, it looks good to me (I can confirm the setting is there on my 3.14 setup) but please check https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/ques...

@FranciscoD_ that may be true so especially given the rep of this user, what's the best thing to do: Close the question? Answer it? Other course of action?

@cgonz31 I'm pretty sure he means see whether it works nicely - could be wrong.

Maybe you're looking for ps or potentially top but honestly, the best answer to that question is:

htop

You will probably need to install it but it's in the repos: yum install htop

Please help, I've just installed Fedora on an old arcade machine but at GDM it only says, "Please Insert Coin to Continue". The only thing is I have run out of quarters. Is there any other way of logging in?

2015-04-01 07:44:17 -0500 commented answer Hide Top Bar after Resume

Thanks, don't know why I didn't check issues. Obviously I'm still in "assume it's gnome's fault" mode.

2015-04-01 07:06:42 -0500 asked a question Hide Top Bar after Resume

I use the "Hide Top Bar" gnome-shell-extension. After I resume from suspend my top bar is permanently gone. The remedy is Alt-F2 r is there a better solution though? Right now I'm just guessing that this is a bug with gnome-shell.

2015-03-30 17:47:36 -0500 commented question Fedora Software search has no results

To be honest, I don't think most regular fedora users use the software app. I suspect we generally use yum or dnf at the command line. I just tried the software app and realised it took quite a while just to load actual content. It's possible that you need to let it populate its own db (who knows how long it takes to do that) but maybe just leave it for a while, do something else, come back to it and see what happens...
