2017-01-31 12:45:34 -0600 commented answer How to try or test new gnome in Fedora

Many thanks for your feedback. I often download Fedora nightly images because I'm curious what's new in there. I often test new features and report bugs for Fedora if needed. Unfortunately, Fedora Rawhide in Alpha phase of development (or prior alpha) does not contain latest Gnome apps which I would like to see, try, test... just because I'm curious and like new features like in case of early Fedora versions. New Gnome appears usually in beta releases.

I run these test images in virtual machine, so I'm not afraid of any negative effects or unstable versions.

2017-01-31 06:25:08 -0600 asked a question How to try or test new gnome in Fedora

I have Fedora 25 with Gnome 3.22.2. I would like to try new Gnome (being in development now) 3.23.x but I didn't find any image I could run in Boxes. Just some modules like here https://download.gnome.org/teams/rele... but I have no idea how to use them.

Could anyone post some howto for testing Gnome which is in development without any impact for production Gnome version please?

2017-01-12 01:51:32 -0600 answered a question how to update adobe flash player.

Adobe released new Flash version 24 for Linux in December 2016. The best way to install and maintain flash-plugin is to install Negativo repository for flash-plugin http://negativo17.org/repos/fedora-flash-plugin.repo. This repo is updated with the latest flash release already. Negativo is an alternative Fedora epository like rpmfusion is. Further Negativo repos can be found here.

Gnome Web (Epiphany) allows the installation of any web site as a local application (webapp) that shows up in the activities overview among the other installed apps. Question is how to remove / uninstall such webapp from activities?

Issue disappear by itself. I plugged the USB stick in the laptop now and it worked. I didn't do anything since I posted my question. I didn't even reboot the PC. This seems to be a bug or I didn't get the philosophy of the external storage format process.

2016-10-06 08:33:08 -0600 asked a question Destination is read only issue

I just formatted my USB stick (had some live image on it) and want to use it for storing my data. I did the format in Disks application (to FAT format) and mount it to my laptop. But each time I try to copy/move some data on the Stick, I get Error: "Error while copying to "USB". The destination is read only" image description

I re-formatted it again, but issue persists. Is that issue on my side or I have got some bug?

2016-10-05 16:44:04 -0600 answered a question How can I delete encrypt my HDD using fedora21?

There are steps describing how to disable LUKS encryption on internet (example) but considering your technical knowledge, I would do it simply: backup (copy) all your critical / important data to some external disk (or USB stick). Once completed, unplug that external device and make fresh system installation - without disk encryption this time. I guess, this will be the fastest and the most simple way how to resolve your problem.

2016-10-05 16:28:10 -0600 answered a question Is there a GUI for Fedora server 24? If so, How can i run it?

For server management, I would use rather Cockpit then desktop environment. There is a blog about it in Fedora Magazine as well. Cockpit should be already installed and configured on Fedora server. If not, install Cockpit on your server (commands executed under root privileges):

# dnf install cockpit
# systemctl enable cockpit.socket
# systemctl start cockpit
# firewall-cmd --add-service=cockpit

Once installed, you can access the Cockpit from your web browser.

Complete guide and documentation can be found here.

2016-09-26 02:48:37 -0600 answered a question How can I paly a .mkv video || Install the software needed to??

You need to install alternative repository from http://rpmfusion.org/ containing all possible codecs (Just follow instructions from that page; install both 'free' and 'nonfree' repositories).

Once done, install following codecs

sudo dnf install -y gstreamer1-plugins-bad gstreamer1-plugins-good gstreamer1-plugins-ugly gstreamer1-plugins-base gstreamer1 gstreamer1-libav PackageKit-gstreamer-plugin lame-libs

2016-09-23 17:07:56 -0600 answered a question Steam - Slow downloads on F24

Fedora uses NetworkManager. NetworkManager has a plugin to enable DNS using dnsmasq.

1. Disable dnsmasq service

sudo systemctl stop dnsmasq.service

2. Then edit /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf file - add (or modify if already defined) following line under section [main]

dns=dnsmasq

3. Now restart NetworkManager

sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager.service

NetworkManager will automatically start dnsmasq.

4. Add 127.0.0.1 to /etc/resolv.conf.

5. Crossing fingers it fixes your issue ;-)

2016-09-21 15:18:46 -0600 commented question Type to search not working properly in Gnome 3.20.2

I tried this search in my case (having the same Gnome version) and it seems to work. I just have to write almost complete name of the file before it is found (if I type just part of the name like "bookmark" instead of "bookmarks", the file is not listed among the results). Anyway, in search settings - please click the gear icon located on the bottom of the search setting window and look if the search locations are activated (set to ON). Maybe they are set to OFF?

2016-09-21 09:42:59 -0600 answered a question How to make customized GNOME app folders settings persistent ?

1. You need to create an override file. Run the following command:

sudo gedit /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/my-settings.gschema.override

You can use your own name for the file "my-settings.gschema.override" but you have to keep .gschema.override part.

2. Put following code into the new gschema.override file

[org.gnome.desktop.app-folders]
folder-children=['']

3. Save that file, exit it and run following command to compile GSettings schemas to make your modification active

sudo glib-compile-schemas /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/

This schema will be activated during next system reboot so your settings will be kept. This modification will be applied for all existing users that are on the system.

4. Run dconf-editor application (if not installed, install it via Gnome Software or command line)

  • navigate to: org / gnome / desktop / app-folders and click on folder-children value.

A new window will pop up. Set the value "Use default value" ON (the default value should be [''] ). Custom value ['Utilities', 'Sundry'] should be gray now. Click on "Apply" button.

5. Look in Activities - there should be no group of apps anymore

6. Reboot your system and check if the groups are still off in Activities

2016-09-21 09:20:34 -0600 commented answer Where to see automatic reports in Fedora?

The Chrome ABRT issue cannot be reported because it is not Fedora product but 3rd party. ABRT submits crashes for Fedora maintained applications only. You can still use the crash report and captured logs for bug reporting with the Chrome developers / maintainers.

2016-09-21 09:16:53 -0600 commented answer Where to see automatic reports in Fedora?

As far as I know, there is no other place / tool gathering crash reports. Everything is tracked via ABRT. It is possible that your issues were related just to one bug in Chrome browser so that's why you see only one problem there. Actually there is one more tool: SELinux - This is not tool for for bug hunting but it detects security violations in your system. Please check what's detected there (I looked at mine and found some Chrome related reports there, maybe that's your case as well)

2016-09-21 07:24:28 -0600 answered a question Inverted touchpad

Is the touchpad inverted in the meaning of Left-handed vs Right-handed primary button or is it the scrolling that's inverted? Please check settings in "Preferences" --> "Keyboard and Mouse".

  • If you need to change Primary button then do so by checking the check-box next to "Left handed...." image description

  • If you need to change the scrolling to natural, look if there is such setting possible (I checked LXDE from live-USB image but I didn't see such possibility in the mouse settings or anywhere else)

2016-09-21 06:40:26 -0600 answered a question Where to see automatic reports in Fedora?

All crashes are reported in "Automatic Bug Reporting Tool" (or just ABRT).

Open Activities and start to type "ABRT". Click the icon that will pop up to start ABRT and see the detected crashes
