2018-02-28 07:03:50 -0500 asked a question [Fedora 27] No sound for non-root users

When I login as root - everything's fine - I can use skype for voice calls, watch youtube etc. No sound problems at all. At the login screen situation is the same - I can increase/decrease volume and hear the sound.

But when I login as a non-root user I face some problems:

  • no sound at all (no system sounds, no sound in skype, videos, etc)
  • no sound devices in "Settings"-"Sound"

Could you please tell me what can be the reason of this? And how to fix it

Here're some logs from user with no working sound:

[user@localhost ~]$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC887-VD Analog [ALC887-VD Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: DA45 [Plantronics DA45], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
[user@localhost ~]$ amixer
ALSA lib pulse.c:243:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Connection refused
amixer: Mixer attach default error: Connection refused

and from user with working sound:

[newuser@localhost ~]$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****

[newuser@localhost ~]$ amixer

Edit1: It's a weird thing. As I didn't manage to fix the problem I decided to create a new user and while I was switching between the users and making settings for the new one I realized that sound started working for an old one.

Edit2: After restarting the problem came back. I even tried to create another user and made the same settings, but sound didn't appeared for an old user this time.

TL;DR I have a non-root user with no sound. But when I login as root, or under newly created users sound works perfectly.
