2017-02-28 13:56:27 -0500 asked a question Unable to use amd graphic card, wayland not starting. VGACOn disables amdgpu kernel modesetting.

Hi all,

I just did a fresh install of fedora 25 on my pc. However, after booting, it is clear that the graphic card is not working properly. dmesg tells the following:

[ 1.622325] [drm:amdgpu_init [amdgpu]] ERROR VGACON disables amdgpu kernel modesetting.

The video card in question is an amd rx480. For the rest the machine is totally fresh. Installed fedora 25 from scratch, updated using dnf update. Does anyone know this error and how to fix it?

With kind regards, Jelmer

Edit: Furthermore, removing nomodeset makes the screen boot black without any output.

Edit2: Well, this seems to be a crash course. My monitor is hdmi 2.0. It seems that the latest kernel version, 4.9 does not properly support hdmi thingy thingy(this part is not totally clear to the writer) which makes it so that the video card displays nothing. I tried things like, radeon.modeset=1 and radeon.dpm=1, but still no signal over hdmi. Does anyone have some suggestions?
