2015-03-27 11:47:59 -0500 marked best answer Fedora 17 hangs while probing the Hard drive

Guys, i'm having a problem that is driving me nuts :P

During the installation of Fedora 17 x86_64, even if i create an USB stick of the KDE Spin or the Install DVD, or using an external dvd driver, the installer crashes on the same step: While formating the disk.

I don't have the error screen right now, but these are the symptoms:

  • While probing the disk after i select "Use Basic Disk config", to avoid probing FcOE and other server specific storage, the installer takes 15 minutes to probe the disk.
  • Alt+F2 only show logs that Anaconda "knows that sdb1 is my live device" so, it will not try to use
  • The LiveCD shows no message.

The installation continues, prompts me the root password, timezone, disk layout and when i click "Next", the root partition starts to format and crash hard so i have to physically power off my notebook. Screen gets weird, keybord dont respond commands.

But if i try to install Ubuntu or even Fedora 16, its okay, works smoothly. S.M.A.R.T tests on this HD doesn't show errors. It's really strange, and my solution could be use preupgrade. lol

I tried to boot even with the following Anaconda boot options on the same time: selinux=0 noipv6 noipv4 linux text

Shall i use the "traceback" option to try to get more information?

My notebooK: DM1-3250BR HP

2012-06-25 06:34:24 -0500 answered a question How do I disable synaptics tap in Fedora 17?

I have the same touchpad on mine dv1 1225 pt_BR, and enabled tap, corner actions and double finger scrool using the kde touchpad config extension(Alt + F2, type touchpad). It works for desabling too.

If you are using gnome, i would suggest the "gsynaptics" tool

# yum install gpointing-device-settings

Cheers.

2012-06-21 09:02:18 -0500 marked best answer Fedora 17 hangs while probing the Hard drive

Nevermind, i've already solved.

The Workarround was: Install Fedora 16 through LiveUSB, and while probing the disks, pull off the USB drive(i did this after get a little "anger") ¬¬. Plug it again, and while formating the disks pull off again, and anaconda from Fedora 16 resumed the install through Network.

It was my kingston pendrive that "fu* up" the installation, or Anaconda while trying to wrongly probe my usb driver.

And yes, i've got a try on boot.fedoraproject.org and even created a HTTP server with Nginx on my other machine, and F17 installer failed miserably too.

It will not be backported most likely. New features are not usually backported.

2012-06-21 08:03:54 -0500 answered a question virtual console

I'm trying to not be pessimist, but i already faced this on my old Notebook with a GeForce 7600Go, and it seems to be a driver bug(with low priority by Nvidia to solve)..

This is the reason why i will not buy Nvidia graphic cards. They are making silly regressions on their drivers, and they dont give a "sh**" to Linux suport :(

2012-06-21 06:37:23 -0500 answered a question What is the difference between fedora and redhat

Basically these are the differences:

  • Fedora is community driven, means, rely on community for producing packages, making quality assurance and support, but this does not means lack of compromise ;) .Red Had is a "product".
  • Red Hat have some homologation programs with hardware vendors. You will not receive support from this vendors depending on the OS installed. This sucks, but you know, for me it's not a real problem to have Debian as Firewalls, Red Hat as intranet servers and Fedora on desktop.
  • Red Hat make track of the features introduced in Fedora, to put on it's commercial product.
  • A Red Hat subscription gives you the ability to install and use the binaries and make updates through it's mirrors. - Source code can still be achieved here - ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/enterprise/
  • Fedora Release Cycle is every 6 months. The current to [current -2] are "supported" versions of Fedora. Red Hat dictates which of it's products will still receive updates and support. Officially RH products have a 7 year lifecycle, but they can(and already did) increase this number for some products.
2012-06-21 06:22:55 -0500 answered a question Network drive mount failed on Fedora17

dmesg show you anything?

I faced this problem with some cifs mounts(Windows) on my work, and i found this problem:

[ 25.497833] FS-Cache: Loaded
[ 25.519201] FS-Cache: Netfs 'cifs' registered for caching
[ 25.541774] CIFS VFS: default security mechanism requested. The default security mechanism will be upgraded from ntlm to ntlmv2 in kernel release 3.3

Still without solution, but using a "mount -a" after boot should work as a workarround for me.

Could you please post your dmesg file contents?

2012-06-21 06:09:44 -0500 asked a question Will dnf be available in Fedora 16 and 17?

Reading some docs(and news) i found this new intersting thing:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/DNF

This will be(as it seems) the new Fedora Package manager, forked from yum and having a more polite way to check dependencies.

But my question is. DNF will be "backported" to Fedora 16 and 17??

Cheers

2012-06-15 07:18:49 -0500 asked a question Boot install DVD iso inside HDD(/home)

Hi guys,

Due to some problem while creating live DVD's on a Pendrive or even using a external DVD drive, i was thinking on boot the .iso that will be stored on my /home partition(sda3), based on this information: http://askubuntu.com/questions/141940/how-to-boot-live-iso-images

menuentry "Lucid ISO" {
loopback loop (hd0,1)/boot/iso/ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso
linux (loop)/casper/vmlinuz boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/boot/iso/ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso noprompt noeject
initrd (loop)/casper/initrd.lz
}

Any clue on how to create a Fedora 17 DVD entry on grub2? Is there a set of parameters that would be usefull while creating this entry?

2012-06-08 15:11:38 -0500 commented answer VMWare kernel headers

It seems that you already have the headers installed then. The VMWare installer abort after displaying you the message about the kernel headers? Look at the help of the installer, and point the headers parameter to /usr/include/linux/ and it should work.

2012-06-08 12:24:41 -0500 answered a question VMWare kernel headers

Try this.

# yum install kernel-headers-`uname -r`

And you'll probably need to install the Development group, to have compilers and other stuff. Run:

# yum groupinstall "Development Tools"

cheers

Try to install the following packages:

2012-06-05 15:14:36 -0500 answered a question How to set system proxy in Fedora 17?

It depends of the "concept" of System-wide. This will apply to Gnome or KDE applications depending on you GUI. If you wanna wget and other CLI related tools to work under the same proxy, you need to add/edit the http_proxy to your environment

Example

http_proxy="http://192.168.1.254:3128"
export http_proxy

put this on your .bashrc and it would be fine. For https and ftp, the variables are https_proxy and ftp_proxy

2012-06-05 13:07:53 -0500 commented answer Fedora 17 : could not allocate requested partitions - not enough free space on disks

The question is. Will you really use this "recovery partition"? I removed this from a DELL notebook of my grilfriend, when she asked for the Ubuntu dual-boot, by making a "Clean" windows install. It took 3 primary(boot, C:, D:) but at least i had one Extended to put linux inside.

2012-06-04 15:53:42 -0500 answered a question Fedora 17 : could not allocate requested partitions - not enough free space on disks

This is happening because you already have 3 primary partitions, and one Logical.

Normally when you have to make a disk layout under linux you can have:

  • 3 primary(already used by Windows, Windows boot and Lenovo Recovery crap, as i can see..) and 1 extended that can have the logical ones inside
  • 4 primary partitions

As you already have 3 primary and 1 logical used by windows, you'll probably need to change this disk layout first, or remove the Lenovo(D:) and Lenovo_PART to have enough partitions to create a dual boot.

I'll recomend you to make a backup, do a fresh windows install(removing all partitions), and you will have just 2 primary partitions comprimissed(C: and Windows Boot). ;).

And yeah, it sucks the way windows+manufacturers manages disk layout. >.<

Maybe you will need to install one of these filesystem modules?

fuse-afp.x86_64 : FUSE driver for AFP filesystem
gvfs-afp.x86_64 : AFP support for gvfs

It seems that this My Book Live is using the Apple Filing Protocol instead of "pure" smb.
