2018-04-26 11:40:35 -0500 marked best answer anaconda and UEFI A few Questions

We know that Fedora will require a certificate from Verisign, to allow fedora versions to boot with signing keys.

What about anaconda? Will there be a signing key for it. Will I be forced to boot from a DVD because booting from USB is not necessarily available or supported?

What about wanting to boot from a virtual machine? Will the VM have a virtual UEFI software?

Since the Flame virus which made the news the past few days could get around signing certificates, why submit normal users to this extra UEFI hassle?

Will the BIOS software be upgradable, when bios bugs are found? If I was a hacker, that is my "port of entry" to defeat all signatures.

2018-04-09 22:30:22 -0500 asked a question Are global version of Gnome extensions no longer supported?

Up until Gnome 3.28, I was able to move my extensions from ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/ to /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions

and thereafter, extract by copy of all the *.xml files from the schemas in each extension to /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas,

folloed by a xml recompile

glib-compile-schemas /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas,

Thereafter my extensions were global and available to each logon. Is this part of gnome not working, or not supported.

2018-04-08 19:21:03 -0500 asked a question HOW TO detect dynamically mounted drives with Gnome 3.28

With the elimination of desktop icons for Gnome 3.28, I need to replace the dynamic appearance of an icon on the desktop corresponding to the plug in of a USB or other device. Now, to know if one such device is mounted, I have to invoke nautilus and look in it's corner of bookmarks. But nautilus does not pop up to indicate a new drive.

To replace the Home folder, the network connection, the trash box and mounted drives, I did create some xxxx.desktop files.

Using the xxxx.desktop, I am able to create an icon for my home folder, for my /project folder, a xxxx to show me mounted drives within /run/media/LOGNAME/

These icons are placed into the favourites bar.

HOWTO DO THIS? I would like to be have a trash.desktop file that would open the trash desktop application so I can review the contents of the trash can.

I am ranting about 3.28 changes. With a blank desktop, one should ask, "Who needs a desktop?"
My advice to the developers, Replace the desktop with the [Frequent] display Thus, one click launches a "frequently used application"

2018-04-08 07:07:07 -0500 answered a question [Sticky] What plugins do I need to install to watch movies and listen to music?

Please visit mirror.yandex.ru/fedora/russianfedora/releases/RFRemix/27/ and pull down a Fedora 27 network istall Remix. The Network installation Remix is entirely in English.

The RFRemix includes a installation list of extra software (tested) that works with Fedora 27. Instead of hunting at different sites for codecs, steam, adobe, skype, .... and then debugging why that extra software is not working, RFRemix has done the work for you.

Russia is not bound by RedHat's constraints to be entirely GPL3, even though most software from the site has accompanying source, some, such as adobe, or steam, or ... are binary only. RFRemix includes vlc, gparted, and more. I use the Gnome version on even day numbers in the year and the KDE Plasma version on the odd days of the year.

Both KDE and Gnome are great. Give that network installation iso a try. You will be pleasantly surprised.

2018-04-08 06:22:36 -0500 answered a question Ask Fedora: Is it working, and what's the future?

The Fedoraforum.org has at times 2000 users on concurrently. They have three or four volunteer admins. However, it is a unilingual English site. And that to me is leaving out a large Fedora user group that are non-English.

Today (April 8, 2018) The fedoraforum.org site is down. Probably for maintenance or system upgrades.

2018-03-22 16:01:12 -0500 asked a question Anyone experiencing March Printer/Printing failure with F27, F28 compose?

I have a brother printer hl2270, installed on Fedora 27 and installed on the Fedora 28 compose. My printer has stopped working around the same time (around March 4 or march 5) The problem is only with GNOME.

The previously installed printer only queued the output. I removed the printer and could not re-install it.

It is still broken, after a Gnome 3.28 upgrade for Fedora 27 and the F28 Compose

On ths same computer , my printer does work with KDE versions of Fedora and fully works with SUSE Tumbleweed Gnome Linux

2017-09-07 18:14:17 -0500 asked a question How do I cross reference lvm to /dev/sd?

I am cross referencing my fstab. My program works except for lvm organizationed /etc/fstab The example below is from my /etc/fstab

/dev/mapper/rfremix_rfronsda-root / ext4 defaults,noatime 1 1
/dev/mapper/rfremix_rfronsda-home /home ext4 defaults,noatime 1 2
/dev/mapper/rfremix_rfronsda-swap swap swap defaults,noatime 0 0

I know from using gparted, that it's on my /dev/sd8 How could I determine it by using some cross reference to the above

I don't know if I can rely on the following From the ls -l listing of /dev/disk/byid I extracted

lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 10 Sep  7 17:54 dm-name-rfremix_rfronsda-home -> ../../dm-2

Can I rely on the lvm-pv-uuid line to always follow the dm-name entries.

Is there a set of links that I am not aware of that I can read to pick up the current /dev/sda8 more easily?

2017-08-18 19:55:09 -0500 answered a question Optimization for an SSD?

It is best to use create the / directory as resident on a btrfs file system and /home as ext4 or xfs.

Search elsewhere as to the comparison between btrfs and ext4 for number of I/O operations for a single data write.

systemctl list-timers NEXT LEFT LAST PASSED UNIT ACTIVATES and we get amonst Mon 2017-08-21 00:00:00 EDT 2 days left Mon 2017-08-14 00:00:00 EDT 4 days ago fstrim.timer fstrim.service

systemctl enable fstrim.service

What I do that may not suit your purpose is I create a root crontab with the following entry

@reboot /usr/sbin/fstrim -a

Every time I reboot the system, fstrim will run. I reboot at most once per day.

2017-08-18 19:46:53 -0500 answered a question Optimization for an SSD?

I have an SSD and I read that btrfs is better than ext4 for the SSD. It has to do with meta data writes and journaling.

btrfs uses copy on right. To write data, it reads the appropriate SSD blocks (if any data and meta data), it writes the data, to a new location. It then writes the updated meta data and changes a pointer.

For ext4, you have journaling to contend with in addition to rewriting data. It seems that btrfs is easier on the SSD than is ext4 or xfs.

I also do the following. I create an entry in the root crontab that appears as follows.

@reboot /sbin/fstab -a

I power up my system about once per day. Ergo, on a reboot, I have a fstrim run.

There is also a systemd fstrim.service which writes a file that has a timestamp. There is a timer that is verified on a count down basis or on a reboot. When the time has elapsed, a fstrim -a is executed (typically once a week).

2017-04-10 16:34:21 -0500 answered a question Anaconda doesn't recognize the free-space allocated for Fedora

When anaconda starts, does it not present a list of partitions? If so, click on the icon for that 500 gig partition. After choosing it, which should work, you can either configure that partition your self or set file installation type to standard and then click the line above filetype to let anaconda do the setup.

Was that what you did?

2017-02-06 12:01:48 -0500 answered a question Fedora 25 doesn't shut down or reboot via GUI

Not owning your model or brand of laptop, the only think I have in my mind is a Network interface problem. Is your laptop using a Broadcom network chip?

Layman's way. Try the following, to determine if it is a network interface problem

Disable networking, reboot (to insure networking is not starting up) dosomething on the laptop do the shutdown as you normally do.

Did the shutdown work or not work?
