2015-12-06 23:21:49 -0500 commented question f23 applications menu has some empty sections after f22 upgrade

If it wasn't for the fact that all the old items are listed I wouldn't even be able to add back the items one at a time, I wouldn't be able to even remember what was there let alone know what to type in the boxes for adding to something to alacarte. I've tried reinstalling alacarte and I'm still getting the same errors when running from cli... all the apps that don't appear on my applications menu seem to be installed they just don't show up in the menu.

2015-12-06 23:14:16 -0500 commented question f23 applications menu has some empty sections after f22 upgrade

I've figured out how to add the items back but it is a painful process when done one by one... create new accessories menu create new item for each item that I want.... this involves having to figure out the location of the binary or command to run it and finding and assigning the proper icon... Seriously if I have to do it one by one it will take me a month... I'm about ready to switch back to ubuntu. Someone please help I really don't feel like wiping my laptop because of a screwed up menu and there is no way I am adding the items all back individually.

2015-12-06 15:43:10 -0500 asked a question f23 applications menu has some empty sections after f22 upgrade

After upgrading from f22 to f23 I have a few blank slots in my applications menu. Accessories, internet, universal access, wine, and other are all blank when I hover my mouse over them, I'm not sure if anything is missing from the other menu sections but they seem fine.

Is there a way to repopulate the whole menu or would I have to add each item individually? I'm guessing the only way to fix this is from the command line and I don't know how to do that. When I open main menu it shows there should be items in these blank sections. I've tried clicking restore system configuration, I've also tried adding items that weren't previously selected, as well as trying to add back items that already were in the menu, none of these seem to have done anything to change the menus blank spots.

The menus sections that were populated I can edit just fine with main menu, adding, removing, and replacing items seems to work just fine. It's just the sections that are blank that I can't seem to do anything with.

Kord, I think that seems to have worked and my drives are still accessible too. How would I do it if I'm not using network manager? I have openvpn set to connect on boot to the vpn, it doesn't go through network manager doing it that way, it just loads the conf file.

the stupid code box isn't working, I've tried indenting each line, I've tried copy/paste of the enter text here code box, I can't enter code the has more than one line, it only shows the first line as code and the rest as plain text. plus these reply spaces are too small for me to type a whole detailed comment...

Where would I add PIA's DNS?I thought that is supposed to be taken care of with the server/client conf files. I don't know what their server conf looks like but here is the client conf they provide, I've edited it to add a login text so I don't have to enter a password client dev tun proto udp remote us-east.privateinternetaccess.com 1194 resolv-retry infinite nobind persist-key persist-tun ca ca.crt tls-client remote-cert-tls server auth-user-pass /etc/openvpn/login.txt comp-lzo verb 1 reneg-sec 0 crl-verify crl.pem

2015-10-11 19:58:57 -0500 answered a question fix dns leaks private internet access

So far the only suggestion I've gotten is to replace the nameservers listed in my /etc/resolv.conf with PIA's namesservers. I tried doing this but my conf gets overwritten by network manager. I tried to change them through network manager but I can only seem to add servers, I couldn't find a way to remove the ones that were there.

If I were to remove the current nameservers(I have verizon fios) would I want to leave my router(192.168.1.1) and just get rid of the verizon dns server(68.237.161.12)? or would I need to remove them both?

What I don't want to do is mess up my access to my networked hard drives, this is why I was asking about the 192.168.1.1 address, also I still have to be able to connect to my home network before I can even access the vpn so I don't need that getting screwed up either.

2015-09-30 18:37:10 -0500 asked a question fix dns leaks private internet access

I'm having an issue with openvpn where its leaking my actual info when I do a dns leak test at https://www.dnsleaktest.com or anywhere else, my vpn info doesn't even show up. When i check my ip with http://www.whatsmyip.org it shows my vpn info, checking systemctl status -l openvpn@vpn.serviceeverything shows that it's connected with no errors. I changed my conf file to verb 6 to try to get more info but I can't even seem to find the logs atm, I'm sure I'll find them in a bit, but I'm not too good at reading logs and using them to fix stuff yet anyways.

My vpn service is through http://www.privateinternetaccess.com and they don't offer support for fedora, they point people to their forums. I've asked for help in the forums but haven't gotten any replies. I've tried a script that is supposed to stop dns leaks but it doesn't seem to work even though it says it's active, plus I have to leave it running in a terminal window for it to run, I don't know how to make it run in the background... The iptables script I tried is here: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com...

I tried to paste the code in a box but it only pastes #!/bin/bash in the code box and everything else ends up below the code box, I don't have enough points the post an attachment either... If someone can tell me how to make the code box bigger so I can paste into it I'd be quite appreciative, the line after #/bin/bash is blank, there are a bunch of blank lines in this script, I'm not sure if that presents a problem when using the code box but it sure seems like it...

I'm just lost atm and don't know where to start, I'm pissed I'm paying for a service that isn't even working, I'm pissed at myself that I decided to go with a service that doesn't offer support for my OS, but at that time I didn't know about issues like dns leaks. I thought all I have to do was import the conf file through network manager or start it on boot as I have set it up to do, and that was it, apparently there is a lot more to using a vpn than turning it on, thanks in advance to anyone who tries to help

2015-09-26 18:55:46 -0500 commented answer How to start Openvpn service at boot time

Great info, this helped me soooo much. Last time I set up openvpn on fedora to connect at boot it took me forever to figure out, this time 10mins. I did have an issue though where sometimes it would connect normally, sometimes it wouldn't connect at all, and sometimes it would connect twice. Turns out I had duplicate files, names slightly different, in multi-user.target.wants. I deleted one and everything works great. Thanks again

Posting this from a fresh install on a different hard drive and the curtain is gone! I use a vpn(openvpn/PIA) and have had a lot of trouble getting it to start on boot so I really don't want to do a fresh install. Before I go and do a fresh install on my regular hard drive I'll install kodi and see if the curtain being gone fixes my kodi freezing problem. Since renaming the .config folder didn't allow the extension to work is there anything else I can try before I wipe and start over? I greatly appreciate your help, if only I could meet people like you irl. Time to mark this solved

I turn off suspend and hibernate on all my computers, it's one of the first things I do. I've had so much trouble in the past with suspend and hibernate that I don't even bother trying to use them anymore.

2015-09-15 12:07:43 -0500 commented answer how do I disable screen shield in gnome 3.16

Points 1 and 2 I had found before I posted my question here(and here: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthr... ), and also the first half of point 3(but not the second half). I had also found the extension and the patch for it, but my editing of the .js file was wrong, but even with proper editing the extension still isn't working.

I'm still not understanding what those advanced settings for kodi do and I have yet to add them, atm my main concern is stopping that screen shield from ever coming up on my laptop

2015-09-15 11:47:23 -0500 commented answer how do I disable screen shield in gnome 3.16

Point two was the first thing I had tried, I had tried that long ago, it just makes it so I don't need a password, the curtain still shows. If I swipe or hit enter the curtain goes away no password is asked for, problem is all the stuff that gets shut off when the curtain is activated.

As for the extension, it shows that it is on, but the curtain still is there every time I open my screen. To get it to be accepted in gnome 3.16 editing the .json file made it turn on, but the curtain was still there. I edited the .js file too(as you have suggested) but with no success curtain shows

in the code that you posted under final content, is that the whole .js files contents? I removed what was in the .js and put in what you posted under final content, it's still not working right

2015-09-14 07:41:48 -0500 asked a question how do I disable screen shield in gnome 3.16

I want to be able to close my laptop and have nothing happen but the screen turn off. When I open the lid I want the screen to turn on... I don't want any locks, passwords, curtains, or anything else, I just want the screen to turn off and on.

I'm running F22 and when I have kodi running and open the lid kodi is frozen, I can't even manage to kill kodi after opening my screen it's that frozen... I'm forced to reboot every time I close my laptop with kodi running.

I guess there used to be two extensions to disable the screen shield, one doesn't seem to exist anymore and the disable screen shield doesn't work for me. Disable screen shield says on github there is a patch to make it work with gnome 3.16 but I don't know how to patch it or if it was was updated and just isn't working for me.

When I first tried disable screen shield the extension said it wasn't compatible with gnome 3.16. I tried what was said in the comments and edited the .json file and the extension said it was compatible and turned on but still didn't work, it didn't do anything and I removed it. I will gladly put it back if someone can help me make it work.

Security is the last thing on my mind atm, I just want my laptop to work... I'm the only person who uses this laptop, it almost never leaves the house, and it's mainly used for entertainment. please someone anyone help... I've been searching for a significant part of the day and haven't been able to find a way around this damn lock screen/screen shield

I already tried: setting the "screen lock" to OFF under gnome setting > Privacy the Disable Screen Shield extension dconf-editor /org/gnome/desktop/lockdown/disable-lock-screen gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session idle-delay 0

2015-04-29 20:52:47 -0500 asked a question openvpn cannot resolve host address

I'm running fedora 21 on my chromebook and a while back I had screwed up pretty good, accidently installing packages from fedora server, this removed a bunch of fedora workstation packages when it installed the server packages. I had had openvpn setup up so that when my laptop booted, openvpn started, and connected to PIA's US East server. It took me forever to get my internet working again and even longer for me to get openvpn to connect and work again, I'm no linux guru, so please go easy on me...

This is what I get when I boot my fedora laptop and check the status of openvpn:
