firefox causes high internet traffic

In Fedora 21, I noticed that firefox was using so much internet bandwidth, that pages would not load or only partially load. I could barely access local news sites, Amazon, not even google, without having to reload the page. Transmission was that slow! This went on for one to two weeks, when I finally noticed that the internet LED on the modem was continually flashing wildly and at high rate, indicating data transmission, even when I wasn't loading any pages in firefox. Even the start page was causing this, but as soon as I shut firefox down, it stopped.

I finally solved the problem myself. It was the new tab page in forefox that was constantly trying to update all of the tabs. This took so much bandwidth, that I was almost unable to surf the web! I tried setting the new tab page setting from enhanced to classic, but it persisted, so I set it to blank and... voilà! The browser functions normally again.

I am now able to surf and pages load speedily and without problems.

This went on for one to two weeks, when I finally noticed that the internet LED on the router/adsl modem was continually flashing wildly and at high rate, indicating data transmission, even when I wasn't loading any pages in firefox. Even the start page was causing this, but as soon as I shut firefox down, it stopped.
