Can't get Google talk plugin to work in Firefox or Chrome

Hi all,

I'm running F17 on a Thinkpad x301. I'm trying to get the Google talk plugin, 64-bit version, to work on this machine and have little luck. I've tried both Firefox and Chrome, with the latest versions as of time of posting (Firefox 16.0.2, Chrome 23.0.1271.64, plugin version 3.10.2.0-1.x86_64).

I've installed the plugin (64-bit version) repeatedly (including uninstalls) on this machine. Signed into GMail, I head to "Chat Settings". The plugin gets detected, I click "Verify your settings". In the expanded video/audio/recording pane nothing works -- no video, no audio, no voice recording.

When the verification starts, the GoogleTalkPlugin process shoots to 100% CPU where it spins for some two minutes, and eventually dies. This happens identically in Chrome and Firefox.

Skype on the other hand works fine -- yikes. I'm trying the above without other applications running, no extensions, etc.

Here's console output:
