This is a followup of sorts to Ask Fedora: Is it working, and what's the future?, where as of this writing the top-voted answer comes from the upstream author of Askbot, asking us to keep up with Askbot and to wait for improvements (with which he is willing to help).

I have a list of things I think are important, and I'm going to add those as answers. Please vote up the ones you like, and add suggestions of your own. And, of course, feel free to answer as well.

To be clear, this isn't meant as a list of demands — it should be a useful, prioritized list of things we need which we will try to get help with — from upstream, from the infrastructure team, from the community of people who have worked on Ask Fedora, and from the open source world at large.

@mattdm: May I ask you what the status with this question and all 33 answers submitted by the user community is? Is there any active development on the Askbot software?

@florian the askbot application has been slowly developed since they only have around 1-2 devs fully submitting code. It has been harder to work with and keep things updated. Specially with everything being changed to python3 and askbot only supports python2. I recommend we continue looking into using discourse since its a fully developed forum application that its maintained by tons of devs.

Whatever you come up with, it need to be intuitive to those logging into the site, not scurried away in some obscure location

Reading through many answers, it seems that overall what is wanted is a mirror of the Stack Exchange network sites features and operation. I am sure that re-working askbot to include many of the suggested features will be a lot of painstaking work. Has it been considered whether to have hosted by Stack Exchange?

Site operation could be improved by making it clearer how to up vote or close an inquiry. As a random user I know I don't know how to up vote a question but that maybe is by design. I think I have figured out how to close but you actually have to know where to go looking to find the close button. It could be a little more visual.

As far as up voting I don't know the rules or the process to get that accomplished. It may be in the guidelines but I don't remember seeing it.

Don't know if this is helpful but these are issues that I as an occasional user have.

Next to each question is a number, with an up arrow above, and a down arrow below. Clicking on the appropriate arrow votes the question up or down. The same thing goes for answers.

Add another editor to easily write more complex formatting answers.
Keep current editor for fast answering, and another editor (easy to use for newcomers) with following features:

  • Add table
  • Change font
  • Font color
  • Subscript and superscript

The comment section is too short to expound properly when giving instructions

I think this is a feature, not a bug. Comments should be transient; put the answer portion in an answer.

When assisting someone with an issue, you often need at lot more space than the "comment" allows. The "answer" section is not appropriate for placing such requests for information as they are not "answers" or "solutions".
