How to run RuneScape's NXT Client on Fedora 25

asked 2016-12-11 06:42:54 -0500

I have managed to run RuneScape's NXT Client on Fedora via an indirect and error-prone method, namely via running xhost +, mounting my /dev/sdb1 partition (on which I have Arch Linux installed with the runescape-launcher AUR package) on /mnt then chrooting into this installation and running:

export DISPLAY=":0" && runescape-launcher

About 30% of the time the NXT client launches without too much drama and is usable to play RS with. But I would like a better solution if possible. Merely extracting the contents of the RuneScape NXT Client's Debian package to my live file system (per this guide on Reddit) does not work, as the client crashes on me. Is anyone aware of some clever tricks that might get it to work on Fedora 25?

I have found one solution to this problem, although if anyone has a better answer I would definitely prefer it over this one. The solution I speak of is to use a Docker container for Ubuntu 14.04, with RuneScape's NXT Client installed in said container (as Ubuntu 14.04 is the only Linux system that is officially supported by RuneScape's NXT Client) and launching RuneScape using said container. I have even committed a Docker container for this purpose it is fusion809/runescape-launcher. To launch RuneScape using it merely run (beware it will take a while to download the container, it's about 800 MB in size):

xhost +
docker run \
  -v /tmp/.X11-unix:/tmp/.X11-unix \
  -e DISPLAY=:0 \
  -v ${HOME}/.runescape:/home/runescape/.runescape \
fusion809/runescape-launcher /usr/bin/runescape-launcher

I personally recommend downloading my runescape-launcher script at GitHub (URL: ) and placing it in either /usr/local/bin or /usr/bin. That way you can launch RuneScape by merely running runescape-launcher.
