How does the extra monitor in my display settings relate to sound output

I appear to have a phantom monitor; display settings shows a "DSG 26"" primary and a "Samsung Electric Company" secondary.

My graphics adaptor is attached to my TV via the DVI port and to my (Samsung) surround-sound amplifier via one of the HDMI ports.

I assume that is the explanation, but I have problems which I think are related. Sometimes when I reboot I have to cycle through the inputs on the amplifier to get the display to show more that just a black or grey screen.

I also sometimes lose applications onto the 'invisible' monitor (especially after I have RDPd to the box).

I also sometimes lose sound and have to fiddle with the display settings to get it back.

How should I reconfigure my system to get this running sweetly?

I solved it by connecting sound = video through the hdmi only
