Fedora 17 will not allow me to boot as a normal user

I've been having problems logging into my new Fedora 17 install (after installing again to try fix this). If I try to login as a normal user, it goes to a black screen, glitches up visually and goes back to the login screen. I can however login as root, but it's obvious why I don't want to do this. However as root, KDE does start. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

What happens if you use runlevel 3, log in as yourself and then run startx?
