How to restore a file from a deja-dup backup quickly?

I had a 500GB hard drive, but it somehow stopped working. I have been backing up my data with deja-dup for about a year, and the backup drive is full of archives created by deja-dup. The problem is, when I try to restore a file, it either runs out of space during the "searching for backups" stage (since my new drive is much smaller, only 160GB), or just hangs forever in that stage.

What is the fastest possible way to restore a file from the deja-dup backup? is there a way to decompress all the backup archives directly on the backup drive (without passing via /tmp or the system drive)?

Restore a Lost File with Déjà Dup

Browse to the folder containing the file you lost.
Click File ▸ Restore Missing Files….
When the Restore dialog appears, it will scan for files that are in the backup but no longer in the folder.
When you see the file you want to restore appear, select it and click Forward.
Review your selections and click Restore.

you also can use deja-up in command-line man deja-dup

for ex. deja-dup --restore FILE1

this is a perfect candidate to fill a bug in against deja-dup

I can't seem to find the "Restore missing file" in the file menu- how do I do this?

I needed to install deja-dup-nautilus. Then the menu item appears on right-click inside the folder window.
