Hi there, I found the problems on each installing new software on Fedora 16. I am newbie Fedora user. I do not know why I chose Fedora for my OS in my PC, I think it is interesting. I always look for rpm file for my new software package. But I still meet the problem every installing under comman line $su -c 'yum install *.rpm'. Any other way to install rpm file or other file (deb, sh, etc)? Please help me

Cheers Bugs

What about using gpk-application? Invoke it from the command line or just find it using the search functionality under Activities.

It is a nice GUI utility to basically Add/Remove software without using the command line.

Alternatively double click the rpm file you downloaded and just install it (it will prompt for a password to complete the operation).

If you downloaded the rpm package and want to use the command line to install it you may use the following (I am assuming you are in the wheel group and can run all the commands as super user using sudo):

sudo rpm -Uvh package-name.rpm

This will work only if all the package's dependencies are satisfied. If not, you will have to install one by one all the missing packages following the suggestions given by the output of the previous command.

if you are installing without internet connection and without yum then make sure that you install all the dependencies needed by that package they are not proprietary software the are open source so you don't find the dependencies bundled in package you have install them first and then install the main software as guided by @ztank1013

hey bug, here is solution for you,

For Download a software or rpm with dependencies Type

where, --downloadonly = just download it.

--downloaddir= directory where you save rpms

sudo yum install --downloadonly --downloaddir=/save/to/dir software name

Like you want to install VLc player then just type

sudo yum install --downlaodonly --downlaoddir=/home/user/Downloads vlc

(user = user-name)

For installing software cd /path/to/dir

sudo rom -ivh *rpm or `sudo rpm -Uvh *rpm`

If u found useful mark my answer as useful bro :)

It is better to install packages with yum - even locally downloaded ones. rpm -ivh won't handle dependencies for you.

[root@localhost fedora]# sudo yum install --downlaodonly --downlaoddir=/home/user/Downloads vlc Yum command has been deprecated, redirecting to '/usr/bin/dnf install --downlaodonly --downlaoddir=/home/user/Downloads vlc'. See 'man dnf' and 'man yum2dnf' for more information. To transfer transaction metadata from yum to DNF, run: 'dnf install python-dnf-plugins-extras-migrate && dnf-2 migrate'

Last metadata expiration check performed 0:00:00 ago on Fri Oct 28 08:26:00 2016. No package --downlaodonly available. Error: no package matched: --downlaodonly

I have found the above error.

Instead of rom in the last command, shouldn't this be rpm?
