What error message do you get before that ? Typically you drop to a root shell when the root file system can not be mounted.

Lots of recent questions on this topic - read those, not a two year old discussion of F16 beta....

No other error message before that. This reads when I thought about running just a boot-up disk, not a live install one, of Fedora 15 so I could format(erase everything)on my hard drive. This all began after installing the new software update Linux kernel version 3.2.2-1 but it never fully loaded. Messing around after that it said I had many duplicates, then it deleted all of them but 12 duplicates. Now it appears as if all my other 3 Linux kernel boot versions won't load up or are deleted with the exception of 3.2.2-1 viewing that it never fully loaded. I have now placed my original, beforehand, Fedora 16 Beta CD-R live install disk in to my Toshiba laptop and it reads pretty much the same at the end (dracut:/#), except, more information of what's now on my Linux kernel hard drive, I'm assuming? This is the reading:: dracut Warning: no root device "live:/dev/disk/by-label/Fedora-16Beta-i686-Live-Desktop" found, and then, Dropping to debug shell, and then, sh:can't access tty;job control turned off, and then, dracut:/#, and then I'm assuming the viewing of the 5 maps on my Linux kernel hard drive now? 1./dev/sda1: UUID="69665472-4214-4301-907d-bbd9992db4b3" TYPE="ext4" 2./dev/sda2: UUID="MXbFNz-VFwx-Qzj5-80b7-N8IB-7fsy-LUwB69" TYPE="LVM2member" 3./dev/mapper/VolGroup-lvswap: UUID="93edff74-f476-4690-8882-217bbbc0d657" TYPE="swap" 4./dev/mapper/VolGroup-lvhome: UUID="6041f328-ecb7-486b-adf2-88c50061f8b3" TYPE="ext4" 5./dev/mapper/VolGroup-lvroot: LABEL="_Fedora-16-Beta-" UUID="08407a3b-dda6-4b7d-ae0c-a401dd6c9826" TYPE="ext4", and then last reading is, dracut:/# ....(Note) Bodhi Zazen, help to fix this would be most appreciated because the monitor screen just went out on my other Toshiba laptop and I have none. Thanks! -)

I can not understand what your problem is exactly, sounds as if you may have several. Sounds like an upgrade gone bad, you may need to do a fresh install and restore your data from backup. And what are you doing with a Fedora 16 beta ? Use Fedora 16.

On start-up without disk in my laptop shows 4 kernels, I hit (C) to take me into GRUB. On a laptop which one is the TAB key for commands? I'm now at the web site http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/16/html/ReleaseNotes/index.html where there is a BOOT section here. 3.2 http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/16/html/ReleaseNotes/sect-ReleaseNotes-ChangesforSysadmin.html and instalation help http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en US/Fedora/16/html/InstallationGuide/index.html are there any commands tp place into GRUB to bring my laptop back up to working order?

Thanks Bodhi, we can now consider this as fixed!!!!! I think this may have helped (1st with no disk in, from GRUB command) I think I may have update dracut using command # su -c 'yum update --enablerepo=updates-testing dracut-013-19.fc16' my laptop then reves-up like it's adding the package thus enabling my Fedora 16 disk to finish loading up later. I just let it run for quite awhile. I booted up from my cd/dvd drive with my same formally Fedora 16 Beta disk then I go to troubleshooting and load Simple Graphical, then, my laptop manages to load-up Fedora 16 live disk again. I find disk utilities while under "liveuser". I run a complete smart disk check and it said it was healthy and then format (cleaned everything off) of my 100GB harddrive Toshiba laptop and Fedora 16 is newer and better than ever. I now view a backup icon so the 1st thing i'm going to do is try saving a backup CD-R. If that don't work i'm sure you will be hearing from me. lolo P.S.the Fedora 16 downloads still display, Confirm Stream Loss. The file 'Fedora-16-i686-Live-Desktop iso' 605MB has extra information attached to it that might be lost if you continue copying. The contents of the file will not be affected. Do you want to copy the file anyway? And I don't know if they would work, they would not for me while in this problem.

I tryed downloading Fedora 16 twice from two different computers using I think both times using Google Chrome. And the download icon appears as an Microsoft icon similar to what takes Microsoft WORD to open it like it does when you open a saved word page. Both times I burn to a disk a pop-up appears reading: Confirm Stream Loss. The file 'Fedora-16-i686-Live-Desktop iso' has extra information attached to it that might be lost if you continue copying. The contents of the file will not be affected. Do you want to copy the file anyway? I click yes and the two CD-R disk does not work, (might be losing checksum, i don't know). I'm trying once more downloading Fedora 16 using Internet Explorer and a closer download F16 mirror to me from Harvard.

Beforehand, my new Fedora 16 updates added a backup package, then a pop-up appeared and said you can now backup your files and wishing to backup my files I clicked it but nothing would ever appear that would allow me to backup my files to a CD-R disk. I downloaded a new Fedora 16 Verne operating system but instead of the writing being in blue like a link has (and like it normally does) the writing is in black. I tried burning it to a 80 min. Sony CD-R Audio compact disk. When trying to install it, it reads Exiting intel boot disk and sends me back to my HD, of which, after trying to load the 3 kernels, they all read loading initial ramdisk but never load and the 4th newest kernel 3.2.2-1 never fully loaded and is messed up. One kernel did give me a long list of a Trace readout with a Warning on one reading this: Warning at kernel/watchdogoverflowcallback+0xac/0xd0c and Watchdog detected hard LOCKUP on cpu1. Now the screen is shot on the other laptop I saved the new Fedora 16 in so i'm now downloading it into another laptop using Google Chrome and going to burn it to a Memorex High Speed CD-RW 12X 700MB 80 MIN. or if that don't work maybe a Memorex CD-R 52X 700MB 80 min. and let you know how that goes. Also noted, I tried the Fedora 16 Beta disk once more and it went to downloading like it was going to load up(with a bar across the bottom) but then came back as a Media Test Failure so i'm hoping that is just the CD-R disk has become corrupt. I'll let you know Bodhi how it turns out whether good or bad. Unless you know of another way to the problem already?
