How do I get dual monitors working with AMD open source driver (xorg)?

I tried to set up dual monitor through the display settings and the second monitor does not display the desktop. It's a Dell 19 inch display. It's just showing the auto-detect display that floats around the screen when it's not displaying anything. It's currently plugged in to my laptop through a VGA port. Here is my lspci

 xrandr  --output 'VGA-0' --left-of 'LVDS'

may need

 xrandr  --output 'VGA-0' --auto --left-of 'LVDS'
