Music files and mime types: best and safest advanced edit

Other questions on here touch on mime types and how to discover and set associations, but I'd like to proceed safely while also better understanding the principles involved. My specific issue is this:

I have successfully organized a newly imported music library. Under my player of choice I now have a correctly arranged and tagged music library. However, some of my files brought over are .wma files - the default Windows audio format. While my player is now set as the default handler for this file type, and which allows tag editing, I have to use Kid3 to expose the HUGE (!) amount of additional tags that the Windows music player kindly added for me ;0) but which are not otherwise visible or accessible.

Since my library is a large one, and since I gather that the efficiency of any app under Linux is likely to correspond directly to how much data it has to sort, I thought I might remove these now redundant fields from my music files. To be clear, the .wma files can have up to a dozen or more additional fields specific to handling a music library under Windows, but which have absolutely NOTHING to do with music reproduction e.g

<wm providerrating=""> <wmsfdkneeded> <wm mediaprimaryclass="">

and so on...

It would be ridiculously time consuming to attempt to edit each file manually by loading it into Kid3. I'm wondering whether making more explicit system-wide mime associations might then expose these otherwise hidden values to the music player (which has an inbuilt tag manager), or would otherwise allow me to do some form of search and edit via desktop tools?

Have you tried EasyTag or ExFalso or PuddleTag?

Did I explain my problem clearly? Are you aware of the very great differences between the way, say, Ex Falso and Kid3 appear to work??
