Using an old Aspire 3500, I previously had F17 working fine (only using GNOME Fallback). This was working with no special Xorg configuration (using the default autodetect methodology), which gave me a normal display resolution and worked just fine - it had it's issues, but it was perfectly usable.

Once the F18b release was announced, I thought I'd give it a try on this laptop instead and see how it went. I upgraded using the 'yum' method - "yum --releasever=18 distro-sync" and have since made doubly- and triply-sure that all packages have upgraded correctly and are at their latest versions.

Since then, whenever I start Xorg using the autodetect method, it creates the display at the correct resolution (black background with the twirly mouse cursor showing it's working), then simply restarts X. Rinse and repeat - this continues endlessly: I have to power off, because unless I have an SSH session, I can't get to a console to break out of the loop.

I tried debugging the log, and saw that it was using the VESA driver, so tried using a basic xorg.conf to point to the SiS driver. I created the xorg.conf using the method "Xorg :1 -configure", then changed the module to 'sis'. Unfortunately, I'm still getting the same result.

Can anyone suggest what I might do to try and fix this?

I removed the xorg-x11-drv-sis package and restarted Xorg with no config file. This allowed Xorg to start completely, however the display resolution is down to 1024x768 (on a native 1280x800), and seems considerably laggy.

I'm still having this issue after formatting and installing a clean F18-KDE Release version - THIS IS NO LONGER A BETA ISSUE. This is extremely frustrating - in F17, the driver seemed to work perfectly fine, but in trying to move forward to F18, X11 loads (with the driver), but as soon as a DM starts, it crashes out.

Is anyone able to help?

Unfortunately Fedora 18 is not supported anymore. Does it maybe work with a new Fedora release?
