problem with authentication dialogue

When I try to run any application that uses the graphical authentication dialogue to acquire root user privileges, such as unlocking the date and time settings, I enter my password and then get the following error statement:

Sorry, that didn't work. Please try again.

I try again, and it says the same thing. I know my password is correct because su and sudo both work in terminal.

Why might this be happening, and how can I fix it?

Look at the line for your user in /etc/passwd and see what it says your $HOME is. If it's wrong, correct it. You'll probably have to do this in a terminal because only root has write access. Then, log out, log back in and see if that helps. If nothing else, it will get you back to using the proper directory for /home.

This is not by any means a good answer, but I reinstalled Fedora because the upgrade to linux-3.6* prevented me from logging in. I think the fact that I was using a workaround to use VirtualBox created some kernel unhappiness so I don't recommend using VirtualBox in Fedora. This may even be related to the authentication problem.

Reinstalling Fedora fixed my problem, although this doesn't tell me anything about why the problem happened.

Reinstalling is actually remarkably quick and straightforward with separate partitions for / and /home. After the installation, I just run a bash script containing:

#!/bin/bash
sudo yum install emacs emacs-goodies-el emacs-goodies stellarium auctex texlive lyx lynx git-all gitk git-gui gparted gimp gnote  latex2rtf openssh-server gnome-schedule bash-completion libpng* python-rope* gnome-tweak-tool emacs-pymacs* emacs-git* gnome-shell-extension-alternative-status-menu gnome-shell-extension-cpu-temperature gnome-shell-extension-drive-menu ecryptfs* libreoffice-calc libreoffice-writer tetex-elsevier easytag
