Unfortunately, I do have the feeling that the search function on this website is not very efficient:

First, when I start typing a search term the top of the appearing list (suggestions) does neither contain the most relevant questions, nor does it start with answered ones. Also, I think the answers listed there are quite old. In my opinion that list should be generated based on votes, views, and (accepted) answers.

Second, after hitting the search button the results are completely different from the previously suggested list, and still not very relevant. It presents a lot of unanswered and unvoted questions. What people are looking for are (most likely) voted and answered questions (most problems reappear in the user community).

If you want to go ahead and verify what I just said, try using the search term "dual boot windows 7". (First entry is a closed question regarding Skype with no votes, nor answers, ...)

What I do if I really want to search this site for a relevant question and its answer is using Google : For the above example, delivers the best (most relevant) results.

In order not to be too destructive, let me make a suggestion: Let's use and external search engine instead of the build-in askbot search. Would that be possible?

It is possible yes, but not easy. Such issues with core functionality are better off being reported to upstream - askbot - IMO - we're really not keen on carrying local changes since it makes maintaining the site more difficult.

@FranciscoD_, true, I understand that this is something that askbot developers would have to care about.

Try using in your favorite search engine.

Already mentioned in my question that I am preferring this solution over the internal search function.

Maybe needs a specific filter (Relevance, by votes) ;)

Oh yes, that may actually help. Standard sorting seems to be by activity. How is activity and relevance in askbot defined? Do you know by any chance? However, after sorting by relevance the results in our example here are still not what one is looking for. (They cover Q/A related to F16/F17, may or may not applicable to F23).

But I understand that this would have to be reported to askbot developers.... Thanks.

FYI, the code is at - you can be an Askbot developer :)
