Right click on a vacant spot on the desktop. Select Create Launcher.

The "Type" should be "Application"
The "Name" should be "Terminal"
The command should be "gnome-terminal"
You may click on the spring icon on the left of the dialog and pick a differentimage file on your hard drive as a custom icon for your launcher and /usr/share/icons has a lot more icons. The command? Put anything you want in there.

Now, you can launch a terminal with Ctrl-Alt-T or Ctrl-Alt-7 but whatver floats your boat.
