Can you try booting an older kernel or, if that fails, running fsck on your file system from a live CD.

No, looks like a nasty error. The new kernel should not have over written the old, you should have 1 or 2 old kernels in your grub menu.

The immediate thing would be to get your data back. Download a livecd, either burn it, or use a pen drive and retrieve your data before proceeding with any fix tricks.

Both 13 and 14 are at EOL, so 15 or 16, of the two, I would go with Fedora 16.

I do not know if is related, but I filed a bug report for a similar problem (for rawhide) https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=766955

You need to run fsck with the partition unmounted. If the partition is unmounted, then yes that is a bad sign.
