A wired connection auto-reconnects on return from hibernation, I could do with an OpenVPN connection also auto reconnecting - this is usually a configuration option of the wired connection in GNOME (i.e., to auto-connect to a VPN), is there a workaroound?

If you always want the VPN connected, you can use nm-connection-editor to link the VPN connection to your wired connection.

Usually you only need to use the Auto-Connect Behavior under VPN settings in Network Manager.

It's well explained in the official documentation: Configuring the VPN Connection, Auto-Connect Behavior, and Availability Settings

If you have problems, there are many alternatives, also avoiding Network Manager. For example: you can create a dispatcher that will connect your VPN and start it like a service with Systemd.
