closing laptop lid causes external monitors to go blank

Setup: Toshiba Satellite L755 laptop running Fedora 16, Gnome 3. NVidia gfx chip, noveau drivers.

I have my laptop plugged into 2 external monitors. With this setup, the screen on the laptop is blank, and my desktop runs across the 2 external monitors, which is exactly as I want it.

However, I can't close the lid on the laptop without it causing the external monitors to go blank too.

I've tried following this tip on disabling suspend, and have set the lid-close-ac-action to "nothing" using dconf-editor. But this doesn't stop the external monitors shutting off when I close the lid.

Anyone have any other ideas? The laptop keeps running (e.g. radio streaming still plays) when the lid is down, it's just the monitors going off.

I believe this is a problem that is fixed in the current release of GNOME to be included in Fedora 17.
