fedora 15 no device files for nics

asked 2012-07-23 07:16:26 -0500

Hi, i'm running fedora 15 and am stuck.

Networking is running fine - so far i have not deviated from the factory setting. But : none of my ethernet cards shows up in /dev

ifconfig shows:

em1 p2p1 lo

find /dev/ -name em1

delivers nothing, /var/log/messages shows nothing interesting

toying and tracing with udevadm shows :

udevadm info --query=name --path=/sys/class/net/em1/
no device node found

following this:

i set up the corresponding ifcfg-em1

references to /lib/udev/rename_device keep getting passed around but i can't find any detailed explanation on how exactly it is supposed to work its magic. tracing it via :

UDEV_LOG=6 DEVPATH=/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:0a.0/net/em1 INTERFACE=em1
IFINDEX=3 ACTION=add SUBSYSTEM=net  strace -f /lib/udev/rename_device

seems like its scans /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and return "em1" like intended

... but still no device files after boot

what stuns me the most is that the system works like charm without them.

Supposing i'm not hunting mirages here :

  • when did RH deviate from the linux ways of the ancient?

  • is there a document explaining the new architecture in detail?

    ( no the handbook that replaces MS's "press this button and pray" with "edit this config like that and and pray" is not a system documentation )

  • can i has device files?

... sorry to stress your patience
