GNOME 3 (Nautilus/Terminal) File Sorting

Looking for a way to get the Nautilus and ls -al output sorted by character and not the way it is now (e.g. ignoring dots and other symbols as well as mixing upper-case and lower-case characters), I found another question here, but the solutions posted are either specific to VIM or do not work.

Is there another option which is used inside GNOME to cause this sorting behavior?
