Fedora 23 hangs on login screen until I press escape

Hi All,

I just got Fedora 23 installed and successfully swapped out nouveau for official Nvidia drivers to stop my PC crashing.

However I now have strange bug occuring on login. After I enter my password in the gnome login screen, all window decorations disappear except the login background and my PC hangs in this state until I press the escape key. At which point the system will load the desktop and every thing runs fine.

I feel like login is waiting on a process to load the desktop which I am canceling by pressing escape, but I can't be sure. Please can someone advise where I can look for the potential cause of this?

Kind regards,

I just installed a Fedora 23 virtual machine - nothing special about it, all defaults accepted during installation from ISO - and this same thing happens to me. I'm in the middle of another project, but I've taken a snapshot and will return to investigate. It may or may not be the same issue, but I was surprised when it happened and I remembered seeing this up here so I thought I'd at least let you know you may have some corroboration for the problem.

I've had this problem for quite a while with 3.18 and the nVidia driver on Arch Linux also.

It seems the Gnome Display Manager is buggy. Install KDM or SDDM. How to switch between display managers is shown here:

If anyone knows the fix for GDM, I'd be glad to know it.

This issue fixed in gnome-shell 3.18.3 (in updates-testing).

Do you have a link to the commit or release notes? This is a fairly common problem and having it documented will be nice for future readers of this post.

# dnf install gnome-shell --enablerepo=updates-testing --best --allowerasing

# systemctl disable kdm.service

# systemctl enable gdm.service

# reboot

No login problem.

I found GNOME bug and some patches to gnome-shell git in it.
