I am having huge problems with sound: the volume is extremely low. I have checked alsamixer and nothing is muted. I am lost as to what to do. Just for the record I am running fedora 16 on an intel imac from 2008ish.

I got quiet videos too, having just updated to Fedora 16. I clicked on Applications > System Tools > System Settings > Sound. For output, I ensured the system knew the speakers had no amplification. I unchecked Mute. I upped the volume. Sound!

No sound to little sound this will fix sound trouble with the new Fedora 16, if not fixed already: With the new Fedora 16 my sound was fixed through Fedora's updates after 12 days with no sound. I'm just speculating that the new package Fedora has now added allowing one's computer to become voice activated and only if activated to allow a blind person to be able to use a computer thus delaying and/or causing our sound trouble. Of which is remarkable and a great feat!!! Sometimes they just need to get the kinks out and they probably ran into trouble along the way.

Did that, but it doesn't change a thing. It even made it worse, now the sound is almost totally off!

Launch 'pavucontrol' from the command line and check if all the volume bars have been pushed all the way to the right.

In alsamixer, have you tried pushing all the volumes to their maxima?
