If you are using Gnome (the default DE), go to Settings>Displays (or run gnome-control-center display
in a terminal) and click on the monitor. You'll see a dropdown menu with all possible display resolutions.
I have now the same problem also. My screen is an ASUS VN279 and Settings>Displays I can only choose the above mentioned resolution 1024 x 768. The ratio should be 16:9 instead of 4:3. What to do ?

What desktop environment are you using?
Also check the command
xrandr
or install the graphical frontendarandr
. You need to know what's the max resolution your card is able to provide, and have a minimum decent graphic card drivers installed
