How to identify lm_sensors output?

This is my output from lm_sensors:

$ sensors

Is there any way how to identify which temperature refers to what hardware (CPU, motherboard, GPU, etc)? "temp1".."temp16" are not really descriptive.

And I am not interested in this particular output only, but in some generic approach to use on any hardware.

is an unhelpful label .. shows the temperature underneath a CPU base


To have 'sensors' use describing labels like above, you can add the following section to /etc/sensors3.conf, if not already there. Use the sensor location findings below.

chip "thinkpad-isa-0000"
  label fan1   "Fan"
  label temp1  "CPU"
  label temp2  "HDAPS"
  label temp3  "PCMCIA"
  label temp4  "GPU"
  label temp5  "System battery (front left, charging circuit)"
  label temp7  "System battery (rear right)"
  label temp9  "Bus between Northbridge and DRAM; Ethernet chip"
  label temp10 "Southbridge, WLAN and clock generator"
  label temp11 "Power circuitry"

You could try to dig through the sensors project website (includes information on the underlying libsensors component) but then if there was a way, the thinkwiki guys would probably make use of it :)
