Is it possible to make shortcuts to special characters like ë for example in Fedora?

Fedora and Gnome have excellent built in support for typing in many foreign languages. However it is inconvenient to change an entire input method for example, just to enter a special character like ë. These special characters are found at the gnome special characters application which has many useful characters. However I am finding difficulty finding a way to create a shortcut to any of them like there are in Windows. Is anybody familiar with this or knows a way how to do this? Thanks in advance.

You want a compose key. Should be quick and easy to configure!
