Hi,

I am using fedora 17 and windows 7 on my laptop with core-i5 processor. Linux Kernel version is 3.3.4-5.fc17.x86_64

In windows, I get a battery backup of 3-4 hrs.

But when coming to fedora 17, it drastically reduces to some 1 hr. By using powertop and minimizing screen brightness, i could improve it to 1.5-2 hrs. But still compared to windows it is much less.

Below is my powertop calibration results :

And it reports a discharge rate of 27W after changing all tunables to "Good".

And I feel system uses more resources while using fedora. Just for copying data to pendrive, one full processor core is run at 100%.

And it even generates more heat than windows.

So I would like to ask if there is anything to be done in fedora to improve battery backup and reduce heat generation?

Today the current Linux Kernel version is 3.5.3-1. Why no update your system? also you can try install Jupiter

Jupiter is a light weight power and hardware control applet for Linux. It is designed to improve battery life of a portable Linux computer by integrating with the operating system and changing parameters of the computer based on battery or powered connection.

Additionally, Jupiter provides quick access to some of the commonly needed hardware controls like screen output and resolution, WIFI, and bluetooth.

If you use Linux on a portable computer, let Jupiter take the effort out of going mobile.

How to install jupiter?

su -c 'yum -y localinstall http://sourceforge.net/projects/jupiter/files/jupiter-0.1.4-1.noarch.rpm'

Eee PC Support Add-On

su -c 'yum -y localinstall http://sourceforge.net/projects/jupiter/files/jupiter-support-eee-0.0.13-4.noarch.rpm'
