Cannot find second monitor

I have a laptop with integrated graphics card and nvidia gtx 850m. I did a clean install of fedora 22 using unetbootin boot disk and using basic graphic mode. After installing successfully I tried to connect second monitor via HDMI port and it cannot find the additional display, rebooted again to see if it'll get picked on but still nothing. Having read around a bit, I believe it's because I have nomodeset in the grub command so I commented this out on boot and initially it booted fine and it found the monitor. However, when I rebooted and removed nomodeset again, the screen hung with just the fedora icon in the middle. I couldn't get to command line via Ctrl+Alt+F2, I had to reboot.

I've read around that I should install my nvidia drivers, so I proceeded to do this via rpmfusion and again machine hung on boot. Then I tried installing drivers from nvidia direct and the same issue, it just hung.

I'm not sure how to proceed now. I'm a bit of a linux noob so any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks Steve

Do you think it would resolve your issue to permanently remove nomodeset from the boot arguments? We can help with that.

Thanks! I've tried removing this permanently by editing the grub.cfg and recompiling. Removing nomodeset gives me inconsistent behaviour - sometimes I can log in but then it hanges, sometimes I don't even get to a log in screen.
