How do I overcome 'waiting for process to finish' errors with DNF?

asked 2015-06-28 03:22:33 -0500

I have been attempting to update from the command line, but whenever I run:

sudo dnf update

I get the output:

Waiting for process with pid 3572 to finish.

I get the same error when I run sudo dnf install <package>. This process does not appear in task manager and when I run sudo kill -SIGKILL 3572 from the command line (which I'm hoping would kill process 3572) it makes no difference (i.e., I still get the same output Waiting for process with pid 3572 to finish.). If relevant I am running 32 bit Fedora 22 on a Virtual machine through VirtualBox.

try using killall like killall -vws9 dnf

Run this command: ps aux | grep 3572 | grep -i grep and you should get exactly one line of output, and this will tell you what process is hanging things up. Once you know that, you can work on getting it killed. Of course, it may be a program that sets a lock file (One of those is yum.) and the program may have died without properly cleaning up. If so, you'll have to find and delete the lock.

Waiting for process with pid 29851 to finish.

But couldn't find the pid while making

 ps -ef | grep 29851

But there was a process with pid 29852 associated with Spotify, I'm sure it could be anything else, I've killed that process that freed the lock on the kernel uninstall and the

sudo dnf install

was able to continue
