I am using GNOME Classic in my Fedora16 desktop. How can I add panel icons so that I can quickly launch applications? I have used Alt+RightClick to add panel icons, but it's not working now.

I was able to add panel icons after switching to Fallback mode. Thanks @mether for the link on fallback mode. So here are the steps I followed:

  1. Launch System Settings from Applications menu.

  2. Click on System Info

  3. Select the tab Graphics

  4. Select On for Forced Fallback Mode

  5. Re-login after selecting GNOME session.

I was able to add panel icons by ALT+Right Click on the top panel. The fallback mode is much faster when compared to the fancier default desktop (GNOME3).

are you using compiz? Unlikely that will affect panel configuration but switch to metacity and try it out. How to add icons is described in

In the fallback mode you can just drag the icon from the application menu onto the panel. That works. I don't know how to delete them afterwards though :-)
