Hi everyone,

First of all, thank you very much for reading my post. I apologize ahead of time for making it a long post. I wanted to share as much details as I could in case it helps find the root cause.

My fedora20 box stopped loading in graphical mode. I have to start in text mode and then do a startx to start the graphical mode. When it loads in graphical mode it goes to a blank splash screen without showing the login prompt. This issue started happening two days ago after I did a restart when my laptop failed to wake up from a suspended state. My laptop is a Lenovo T440s.

After trying a number of different options, I decided to do a fresh install of Fedora20. Unfortunately I am still stuck in the same limbo.

Here are my questions.

  1. Interestingly, the laptop monitor is blank. However if I connect it to an external monitor then I can at least get the text mode login from fedora boot option.

  2. Since I can do startx from the external monitor and go to the graphical mode, does that mean the laptop monitor itself is the culprit?

  3. How can I force it to load with a single monitor (preferably the laptop monitor) in graphical mode?

  4. Should I try MATE of xfce or KDE instead of GNOME3? This same box worked fine with Fedora20 GNOME3 for last 1 year.

  5. Another interesting thing that I noticed is after starting the graphical mode with startx in the external monitor, when the screen becomes inactive after being idle, I can no longer log back in from the graphical mode login prompt, When I start typing my password in the graphical login it does not show any keys being typed and the screen flickers.

  6. If I disable my laptop monitor and make the external monitor as primary then the graphical mode loads fine and I am able to login and use Fedora normally.

I have checked the following so far:

  1. lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 36 May 16 18:41 /etc/systemd/system/default.target -> /lib/systemd/system/graphical.target

  2. systemctl get-default graphical.target

  3. I checked Xorg.0.log. It does not have any EE messages. There are 5 warning messages which might be harmless:

(WW) "xwayland" is not to be loaded by default. Skipping. (WW) Falling back to old probe method for modesetting (WW) Falling back to old probe method for fbdev (WW) Falling back to old probe method for vesa (WW) evdev: Logitech USB Receiver: ignoring absolute axes.

  4. 00-keyboard.conf file is the only file under /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d . Is there supposed to be other files there?

  5. journalctl -b -u gdm.service -- Logs begin at Sat 2015-05-16 18:51:42 CDT, end at Sun 2015-05-17 10:14:48 CDT May 16 20:21:41 localhost.attlocal.net systemd[1]: Starting GNOME Display Manage May 16 20:21:41 localhost.attlocal.net systemd[1]: Started GNOME Display Manager

  6. kernel: Linux version 3.11 ...

try, from a root console: dnf install lightdm;systemctl stop gdm;systemctl start lightdm

If that works, turning off wayland in /etc/gdm/custom.conf might help. Or, test that first. Or use sddm or lightdm instead.

I have similar situation with asus k70a laptop. After consequtive upgrade (with fedup) from f20 through f21 to f22 I got the following: I see the login invitation to Gnome with the list of users but mouse pointer is hanging exactly in the middle of the screen. If I switch to console screen with Ctrl-Alt-F button I can login into any user in text mode but in a minute or less screen is covered with 'noise' - sort of colour dust similar to one when graphic cad is switvhing from one mode to another. Keyboard is working but nothing can be recognized.

So I booted into text mode by adding 'quite 3' to the kernel line in grub. In this case I can use startx to get into Gnome but only under root.

Still no solution after 2 evenings of googleing. Any help would be highly appreciated.
