Cannot Sign Into Ask Fedora Using Google OpenID

I recently re-installed OS on my home PC. When I tried to sign into Ask Fedora using my Google account I was redirected to a page that says:

OpenID 2.0 for Google Accounts has gone away... OpenID 2.0 was replaced by OpenID Connect, and since April 20, 2015, no longer works for Google Accounts...

I am able to sign in using only one browser on my laptop that I used during registration before that date. I am not signing out from that browser because I'm pretty sure that I won't be able to sign in back afterwards.

Is there a way to preserve Ask Fedora account registered with Google?

I don't think there's any way to preserve the Google login for Ask Fedora. At least not for the time being. You can use any of the other login methods. In my case, I did not have any other supported account so I created an OpenID.

I did not have an OpenID before. If you have one, you can use it to login to Ask Fedora. If you don't have an OpenID, there are many websites to create a free one. I used the Symantec VeriSign Labs to create an OpenID.

After creating the account, you can link your Ask Fedora account with this login method in the "Manage Login Methods" page:

Once Ask Fedora recognizes the OpenID, try login into Ask Fedora from another computer before signing out of your current Gmail-login Ask Fedora.

The fix was finally applied sometime today. The proof is that I'm here, because I was one of the many users affected by it. If you only have a login via Google, as I did, I'd recommend adding a secondary one as soon as you log in. Go to your Profile and on the Overview you'll see an option to manage login methods. If you don't have a secondary OpenID, it's probably a Good Idea to get one and attach it in case something like this ever happens again!

The issue has been reported and people are working on it to get it fixed. I am hopeful that someone will fix it and update askbot to use OpenID Connect. They should also find a way to link our old account when we authenticate it using google later. You can track the work in progress here.
