Using Fedora 20 (or a liveCD of fedora 21) sometime last week, an update broke my ethernet connection to the university internet, which filters access based on MAC address. Windows has been fine throughout. All I see in the logs are "dhcpv4 request timed out"

All I see in the logs is the following, ad infinitum. Sorry for the formatting, not sure how to fix it here.

I have tried a dhclient -I mac:address:goes:here but it doesn't work.

Also tried adding to /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf the line send dhcp-client-identifier=mac address; neither helped.

Open up NetworkManager and edit the connection. On the Ethernet tab, is the MAC address the same as the one Windows uses? On the IPV4 Settings, are you properly set for DHCP? Are your IPV6 settings correct? Any one of those might be the culprit, and until they're eliminated, there's no sense looking someplace else.

Everything is set to automatic on those settings. I don't have to configure on Windows, so I assume automatic is correct.

I checked, the mac address is the same, although it has (em1) appended at the end of the address. em1 is the name of the ethernet.

So,for anyone unfortunate to come upon this problem, I resolved it by changing /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf to be more like Debian's; namely it now looks like:

send host-name = gethostname();

request subnet-mask, broadcast-address, time-offset, routers,
    domain-name, domain-name-servers, domain-search, host-name,
    dhcp6.name-servers, dhcp6.domain-search,
    netbios-name-servers, netbios-scope, interface-mtu,
    rfc3442-classless-static-routes, ntp-servers;

Thanks a lot to whatever fedora dev thought itd be cool to use send host-name=hardware :P

Two notes to the above aswer:

  1. dhclient.conf won't exist on a fresh install, you have to create it
  2. I had to use send dhcp-client-identifier = hardware; but this may depend on the network / dhcp server. The request ... part isn't needed in my opinion.

Thank you for that solution, i used it as described in dauers comment, worked for me after spending hours without success... does anyone know why they changed the setting? have you filed a bug?
