I can ping either host on my LAN but not ssh nor browse. FEDORA17

asked 2014-12-16 13:30:38 -0500

I have 2 hosts on a private LAN. They are listed in /etc/hosts. /etc/hosts.deny is empty. /etc/hosts.allow cites both hosts. Either can successfully ping the other, but neither can firefox-browse the other nor ssh to the other. What am I missing? Thanks.

If your machine is using Fedora 17, you're using a version that has not been supported for several years, and there are no updates, including for security. You need to update to at least Fedora 20, as 19 will also reach End Of Life very soon now.

There are several things to check.

  1. You should check your firewall configuration. If the machines are blocking connections on the service ports, then you will not be able to connect.

  2. The machines need to be running a service for each of the things you're trying to run. Firefox will connect to a web server - so you'll need Apache, or one of the other web servers, running on the machine you're trying to browse, and for ssh, you'll need to ensure the server end of the connection is running sshd.

You can test these services by trying to connect to the localhost service, either point Firefox at 'localhost', or try to 'ssh localhost' and see what the results say.

These are only troubleshooting steps, they're not a solution. They may help you find out what's going wrong, though.
