Install vlc again from the terminal, login as root and use the command - "yum install vlc". After installing check whether problem is solved or not, if the same problem persists then perform update using "yum update" I am sure your problem will sort out.

You should mention how you installed it. However assuming you have an updated fedora and you have RPM Fusion installed it's better to install popular and useful codecs first. By the folowing command you can do it

yum install gstreamer gstreamer-ffmpeg gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-bad-free gstreamer-plugins bad-nonfree gstreamer-plugins-base gstreamer-plugins-good gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer-plugins-bad ffmpeg libdvdcss libdvdread libdvdnav audacious-plugins-freeworld-mp3 phonon-backend-gstreamer xine-lib-extras-freeworld
