I am using skype 4.2 on fedora 20. My skype works perfectly on windows. Skype worked perfectly fine on my last log in on linux. All of a sudden, i noticed that I get this message "Skype cannot connect" when I try to log in. I tried deleting the .Skype folder on my home directory, but nothing happened.

Read this post/announcement and the comments at the Skype blog.

You need to update to the newest and latest version for Linux(right now 4.3).

What has been changed with this new approach for Skype versions is that, Microsoft (on a point of view, my view) wants the users updating (force-updating) to the latest version of Skype. Older versions will stop working as soon as a newer version becomes available.
