I just now down loaded inkscape, opened the very first window and there is a giant square right in the middle of it. Tried to get rid of it and it won't go. Opened other types of pages and there it is in every thing that I try......is that thing supposed to be there right in the middle of the screen?

Please note that this isn't a Fedora specific question. The inkscape community will have their own forums. For example: http://www.inkscapeforum.com/

Yes, that thing is supposed to be there, so you can see what page will be saved (when you export your image). It's something like a guide of your workspace.

But if you want to remove it completely, you can do so, from the Document Properties page. Press Ctrl+Shift+D to open Document Propertries (or go from File → Document Properties), and UN-tick the Show page border box. That's it.

Be aware, that next time you will open inkscape, you should follow the same procedure, because this is the viewbox and you cannot actually remove it permanently, you can only hide it for the current "session". (thanks to @heni for this addition).

You can learn more about inkscape if you visit the Turorials Official page (thanks to @hello who indicated this)

Maybe add that it is the viewbox, and that you never really remove it, you hide it.

Add some links with Inkscape tutorials, because it is the same across many distros? For example:

www.inkscape.org/en/learn/tutorials/

inkscapetutorials.wordpress.com/

BTW, I just took the first ones off of Google (inkscape tutorials).
