Hello,

PLEASE HELP ME OUT!! I have a HP pavilion 17-e163sg laptop. I have installed Fedora 20 Mate. But no matter what I do, I cat get working either the graphics adapter or the sound !! I have tried 2 scenarios:

1)

I am installing Fedora 20. Then I am installing Skype. After rebooting, there is no sound at all!! I figured out, that this can be solved by doing yum update, then after rebooting, the sound is magically back !! Then I am installing the native ATI Catalyst 14.10 driver and after rebooting, the system comes back with a black screen!!

2) I am installing Fedora 20. Then I am installing the native ATI Catalyst 14.10 (the latest available from AMD). It works Then I am installing Skype. After rebooting, there is no more sound at all. If I do yum update to fix the sound problem as well, Fedora comes back with a black screen and I am not even able to switch to another console !!!

PLEASE advise how can I have both working audio and video at the same time !!

If you didn't install the drivers from a repo, they are probably built for the running kernel at install time. When you update, you get a new kernel, which the catalyst drivers have not been built for. Try booting the previous kernel; if that works, you need to boot the new kernel into a multi-user target and reinstall the driver. You could also remove the catalyst driver and use the one in-kernel.
