I installed fedora 20 to an old laptop. The kernel is 3.11.10-301.fc20.x86_64 and I chose to encrypt the fs. The installation went fine and I was able to boot and login in the system. After the updates, new kernels are installed where the problem occurs. the boot ends up with a blank screen. I wonder why i am still able to boot with the old kernel and if there is any option to give to the new kernels in the boot. I am not sure if it is relative but i noticed that gnome-shell eats lot of the memory. here is a dmesq copy from the last attempt.

Not sure if this will help but periodically I have an issue similar to this and I find that changing the gfxpayload=keep to gfxpayload=text initially by editing the parameters from the grub2 screen and then hit F10 to boot. If this works for you then look at changing it permanently.

gfxpayload=text does not work in this case.
