Is there a way as with old versions of gnome to change the format string that the clock indicator/applet uses in gnome 3.10? I would like to remove the spaces around the colon (4:15 vs 4 : 15) and also add some personalized text to one side (company name for instance).

There are no spaces around the colon in my Fedora 20. Are you using the default gnome-shell theme? Could you post a screenshot, please?

oh wow, you're right (now I feel stupid) I'm not using the default gnome-shell theme.. well regardless, is there any way to do what I'm asking without designing my own shell theme or hacking the one I use?

Well, there is no reason to feel stupid :) Where did you get the theme? If it is from gnome-look.org , then the easy way is asking the author of the theme.
