Is it possible to update Fedora 17 with yum fedup to the latest release (20) or it should be updated step by step like in this official guide ?

The best and most sane way to upgrade is to do a new installation of Fedora 20 after making a reliable backup of all of your critical data. In my experience upgrades using fedup take quite a bit of time and involve a certain degree of luck. Further, there is no guarantee of success. A fresh install is by far much faster.

Agreed, Fedup in F17 was still very new and not well tested. You might as well just reinstall.

My personal tip is to to delete as many dot files in your home directory after the upgrade. I find that developers put very little time in migrating old config for their new software.
