bash: $: command not found... on terminal

After entering this $ egrep '^flags.*(vmx|svm)' /proc/cpuinfo , terminal returned the answer "bash: $: command not found". what should I do?

The symbol $ is not included in the command! It should be:

egrep '^flags.*(vmx|svm)' /proc/cpuinfo
