I still have regular sound. I can play music, get regular notifications beeps etc..

However, when I increase or decrease volume, usually I would get a little beeping sound. Now I don't get it anymore :-/

I haz no idea how to troubleshoot.

Any ideas?

Fedora 20, Macbook Air.

My Fedora 20 installation running the Mate desktop doesn't make a sound either. I don't recall it making a bleep sound for a long while. I can't say I miss it, but I suspect there's a way to turn it on. Which desktop environment do you have?

I have Gnome running.

I kinda miss it because I often switch between headphones, bluetooth headphones and built-in sound, :-/

To answer my own question,,

I figured out the problem.

I was in the 'Sound effects' tab in the sound menu. I changed the alert sound back and forth between the available sounds, (Default, Bark, Drip etc..). Then I also noticed that the volume slider was very low, I cranked it up a bit. After that I can now hear the beep sound again.
